When speaking to students at the American University in Washington state during his state visit to the US, Canada’s popular Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, known for his wit, told an American audience that he has more Sikhs in his Cabinet than his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
Trudeau made the comment when student Jahan from Punjab, in Pakistan said it was great to see so many Punjabi’s in his cabinet. The 4 Sikh Canadians in Trudeau’s Cabinet include Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan; Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi; Small Business Minister Bardish Chagger, and Innovation Minister Navdeep Singh Bains.
17 Sikh MPs were also elected in Canada last year, 16 from the Liberal Party and 1 Conservative, making it the highest number of Sikhs ever elected. Trudeau has also been seen doing bhangra dance moves and visiting Gurdwaras, and he participated in Diwali celebrations, and even helped women prepare meals in a langar.
During his session at the American University students ragged Trudeau by inducing his opinion on America’s front-runner Donald Trump. In typical style poker-faced Trudeau said he has ‘confidence in the American electorate’ – a remark that evoked laughter from his audience
In India by contrast there are 2 Sikh Cabinet ministers in the Modi government – Maneka Gandhi and Harsimrat Kaur Badal the Food Processing Minister.
