Kerala constables sentenced for custodial death after 9 years

Two police constables, Jayakumar, 47, and Venugopal, 48, were charged with murder and other offences in connection with the death of Rajendra after he was interrogated in a police station in Kollam in 2005. The police took Rajendra into custody in connection with the theft of a mobile phone based on a complaint lodged by a private hospital.He was interrogated by the accused constables and third degree methods were used which led to his death. Though he was rushed to hospital Rajendra died. The court found the two constables guilty of wrongful confinement and acts done by persons in furtherance of common intention. They have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
