Constable Aloke Aich, 53, of the Kolkata Police was on duty at Eden Gardens when David Miller batted pacer Andre Russell for a six and the shot hit him in the right eye, blinding him during an Indian Premier League match.
Miller was in a state of shock at the accident and said he was deeply saddened that the freak accident caused the loss of Mr Aich’s eye.
The accident happened during the match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Kings XI Punjab at Eden Gardens.
Aich’s son said he feared the injury may force his father to give up his job or take voluntary retirement.
Miller scored 27 not out from 11 balls in the match in question, which Kolkata won by one run.
