Kumbh Mela to ban selfies for fear of stampede

MERAnoselfiA ‘no selfie zone’ is to be implemented at the Kumbh Mela Hindu pilgrimage festival in Nashik, that has already attracted nearly 3 million people since July, for fear they could cause stampedes.

Authorities say selfies will be banned on the days people ritually bathe in the sacred Godavari river and organisers say a study they conducted showed that people took too long taking selfies and this slows down the flow of people, leading to pushing and panic.

The festival takes place every 3 years. It began in mid July and runs till late September and selfies will only be banned during the days of the holy dip, as the authorities do not want to spoil the festive mood on other days.
