Kuwait NRI returns to build stadium in Karnataka

INITIAlarenLawrence Saldanha a native of a small village in Udupi district of Karnataka, has always wanted to encourage sports and provide modern facilities in the rural areas. He has now begun to construct a multipurpose stadium in Kowdoor, just some 25 km from Udupi, at a cost of Rs.20 million.

Saldanha, who runs a small business in Kuwait said it was his faith in the sports abilities of rural children that prompted him to take on this project as there are no modern sports facilities in rural areas, and he especially wanted his native village and surrounding villages to enjoy the facility that only children in urban areas get.

The stadium will have facilities such as a cricket pitch, 400-metre track, 500 capacity pavilion and 500 seating capacity in the spectator galleries, and 10 rooms behind the pavilion to accommodate athletes.

What’s more extraordinary, the selfless Mr Saldanha has built the stadium on his own ancestral land. In addition to this project Saldanha wants to develop another 1.5 acres of land nearby as a volleyball court and basketball court.

The people of Kowdoor are elated with the stadium and a cricket tournament will be held to mark the inauguration, and every year after that.

The stadium is almost ready and will be inaugurated on January 9, 2016.
