Labourers beaten to death by cops for refusing Rs.100 Bribe

PolicemanTwo labourers were allegedly beaten to death by cops in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, for refusing to pay a Rs.100 bribe.

Reports say at first police claimed that the two victims, Dilip Yadav and Pankaj Yadav died after jumping into a pond when they attempted to run from the cops at a vehicle checkpoint. An autopsy however suggested that the labourers had succumbed to their injuries prior to drowning.

Angry protests ensued after villagers found the bodies floating in the water. Protesters including the victims’ families blocked roads and attacked several policemen.

An FIR was filed by Pankaj’s cousin against the police chowki in charge, Udaiveer Singh, head constable Girish Chandra, constables Gaurab Singh and Vinay Gautam, home guards Viresh Kumar and Ram Khilari as well as brick kiln owners Sunil Verma and Pramod Dube.

They are charged under the IPC sections on murder, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal conspiracy.

The SP who had rushed to the site had suspended four police personnel and wrote to the department head asking for action to be taken against the two home guards.
