External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced that the government has extended the last date for applying to convert Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cards to Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cards. The new deadline is now December 31.
Minister Swaraj said they felt that conversions would not be completed by June 30, so they decided to again extend it to December 31. It had earlier this year been extended from March 31 to June 30.
She said there would be no charge for conversions during the period and suggests those who need to convert their PIO cards, use this time line so conversions are completed by December 13.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the PIO and OCI cards are to be merged and the India diaspora will receive maximum possible benefits.
Officials also said the existence of both PIO and OCI cards created confusion among PIOs residing abroad.
