Late Ismail Merchant nominated as next face of British bank note

NRINGiMerchantSome 30,000 nominations have been received from the British public who were asked by the Bank of England to nominate artistes for the 20 pound note.

Mumbai born Merchant, of Merchant and Ivory fame was a producer and director of acclaimed films such as the Remains of the Day, A Room with a View, and others. He and Ivory formed Merchant Ivory Productions in 1961. Merchant died on May 25, 2005 in London at the age of 68.

Merchant has been nominated along with Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier, John Nash, Richard Attenborough, William Blake, Francis Bacon and Charlie Chaplin. The chosen character will be announced in 2016 and the new 20 pound note will enter circulation in 3 – 5 years.

The Bank has featured characters on banknotes since 1970.
