The British government's New Year Honours 2015 list was announced by the government, in which it has decided to award the British Empire medal to the world's oldest marathon runner, Sikh NRI centenarian Fauja Singh. Singh, 103, from Essex completed his last competitive 26-mile race in Hong Kong last year. He gained the title of world's oldest marathon runner when he finished the Toronto marathon in 2011 when he was 100. The New Year Honours is a part of the British honours system, with New Year's Day January 1 being marked by naming new members of orders of chivalry, and recipients of other official honours. The British Empire Medal was established in 1922.
