According to data by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) close to 60,000 married men committed suicide in 2014, compared to 27,000 married women.
However, 1400 widowers ended their lives compared to 1300 widows, indicating that after divorce in the case of a spouse’s death, men’s propensity to commit suicide falls sharply.
In a nutshell the data showed that overall 66% of all suicides are committed by married people. Just 21% of the suicides were by the unmarried, while widows/widowers and divorced people made up for less than 3% of all suicides.
The data throws no light on why such a trend exists.
