In response to a lawmaker’s question on farmer suicides in Sehore district near Bhopal, the state home minister Bhupendra Singh said many of the deaths were because of ghosts. In a written reply he said there were over 400 suicides there in two and a half years.
The Congress lawmaker Shailandra Patel who asked for the statistics said he was stunned that the minister had attributed some deaths to ghosts. The home minister said that some died because of ghosts and black magic and when counter-questioned on whether the state government believes in superstition he was silent.
As screen shots of the response were circulated by the Congress legislator, a defensive home minister told the media that the state had not said people died due to ghosts, as it does not believe in such superstition.
