Ranjit Singh Power, the British NRI hotelier has been confirmed murdered by Punjab police but his body is yet to be recovered, rejecting initial reports that a body found in a Punjab forest was that of Singh Power.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police confirmed that the victim’s friend and business partner Badev Singh Deol, and Deol’s driver strangled Power in Ropar district near Chandigarh. He said the crime was committed on May 8 when Power landed in India and was last seen in Amritsar. His body was later thrown in the Bhakra canal in Ropar. Doel returned to Britain after committing the crime.
Based on interrogation of the driver Sukhdev Singh, who is also Deol’s nephew, police have unearthed incriminating evidence, and they will seek the remand of Sukhdev Singh and initiate extradition of Deol from Britain. The car used in the crime has been recovered, but the victim’s luggage that police say are in Sukhdev SIngh’s flat are to be recovered.
Both Sukhdev and Deol were booked for murder and kidnapping or abducting under the Indian Penal Code. A property dispute is believed to be the cause of the crime.
Power, 54, who owns a hotel in Wolverhampton had gone to India for a business deal. His family had announced a reward of 25,000 pounds for any information leading to his whereabouts.
