Monsoon rains cause havoc in Gujarat

9d9gk190Incessant monsoon rains have caused widespread damage to public and private properties, as over 10,000 people were moved to higher ground, including 1000 who were airlifted to safety.

Air force helicopters have been dropping food in affected areas after over 70 people were reported to have died in flood-related incidents. The downpours have caused house collapses in the worst affected Saurashtra region.  The coastal district is also badly affected where more than 600 villages have been affected.

Meanwhile flood warnings have been issued in Kashmir state where floods killed some 300 people last year.

India receives 80% of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season which runs between June and September.
