Mumbai to have LGBT private taxi service

MERAlgbtMumbai’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens will soon be able to drive private taxis thanks to a project called Wings Rainbows, launched by Wings Travel and the community organisation Humsafar Trust, who will train up to 300 members of the LGBT community to drive cabs in the city.

Pallav Patankar director of programmes at Humsafar Trust said they hope the move will set the ball rolling and open up other such opportunities to the LGBT community who have very few opportunities because of the stigma they still face.

In 2014 the Supreme Court recognised transgenders as a legal third gender and called on the government to ensure their equal treatment.

Despite the ruling, sexual minorities have been driven to the fringe of society into begging and sex work, and still face discrimination in jobs and other basic services.
