Mumbai’s legendary Dabbawalas introduce ‘Roti Bank’ to fight hunger

MERAmumdwalahMumbai’s famous Dabbawalas (tiffin carriers) have begun the ‘Roti Bank’, an initiative to help feed the hungry and prevent food waste at social events such as weddings.

One wedding planner Rshikesh Kadam who is actively involved with the cause has tied up with the Dabbawalas Association and with caterers across the city, as food is wasted at weddings, and other celebrations.

Now the food left over in areas of Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai will be collected by the Dabbawalas and distributed among the needy.

A spokesperson of the Dabbawala Union said they want to distribute more food to the poor and some 400 are working round the clock to make their non-profit initiative work. It has been just over 10 days now and the response has been overwhelming. He said the Dabbawalas are now trying to find ways to schedule a pick up at local stations where people can drop by and hand-over their leftovers.
