According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) that has for the first time tabulated data on reasons for abductions, also suggests that ransoms are no longer a major motivation for kidnapping.
The NCRB data for 2014 shows that of over 77,000 kidnappings only 676 were motivated by ransoms. On the other hand nearly 31,000 women were kidnapped with the intent to compel them to marry. Over 1500 were kidnapped with the intent to murder.
The data show that UP, Bihar and Assam accounted for almost 50% of all kidnappings for marriage. Explaining the data, police sources said when a boy and girl eloped the girl’s parents registered a complaint of kidnapping against the boy, which was why there was a high number of kidnappings for marriage.
