Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who had promised to introduce prohibition in his election campaign last year, called it a “Historic Day’ as everyone is dedicated to making prohibition work.
Starting on Friday a new law will apply that provides a maximum sentence of the death penalty for those found making or selling home-made liquor that kills consumers. If a consumer gets seriously ill, a life sentence will apply for the makers or traders of the toxic alcohol.
Initially all shops selling country liquor in rural areas will be shut down, and in some cities alcohol will be available only at government-run outlets. Total prohibition is expected to be introduced six months later.
Only Gujarat has a similar law, and does not permit alcohol.
