No revised passport regulations for single mothers, as rumoured

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin has rejected news of revised passport regulations for single mothers, and refuses to accept that such new was announced. He confirmed there were no changes in the rules and that a single father or mother had to furnish just 2 documents, a birth certificate from the registrar of births, and an affidavit which the single parent swears before a magistrate. The rumoured regulation stated that an unwed mother must file an affidavit stating how she conceived, and whether she was raped or not. Mr Akbaruddin said if the reports are found to be correct it is contrary to what the Government of India or the Ministry of External Affairs stands for, as they do not stand for gender discrimination and do not countenance insensitivity in such matters.
