NRI American and Canadian envoys assume posts in Delhi

US ambassador Richard Rahul Verma, the first NRI to occupy the post, and Canadian high commissioner Nadir Patel, also the first NRI to occupy his post, presented their credentials to President Pranab Mukherjee in Delhi. US Ambassador Richard Verma, whose parents migrated from India in the 1960s acknowledged the contribution of immigrants from India and vowed to 'strive to live up to the high standards they have set', citing the example of his own parents who worked hard, continue to pursue their dreams, and have helped ensure India and the US become close friends and partners. He served as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs at the State Department in the Obama administration. He now fills the post vacated by ambassador Nancy Powell last May. Canadian High Commissioner Nadir Patel is the son of Gujarati immigrants. He stated he is looking forward to working with PM Narendra Modi and his government to expand ties between Canada and India. Patel served as Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Financial Officer for Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development. Prior to that he held a series of government positions, including Chief of Staff to the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister and Secretary to the Cabinet. He also served as Canada's Consul General in Shanghai.
