Saini, 60, currently Vice President of the University of Toronto and Principal of the University of Toronto Mississauga campus in Canada, will succeed Vice Chancellor Stephen Parker in September.
Chancellor and Chair of the University Council Tom Calma said ‘Saini’s outstanding academic pedigree and international experience will be key to delivering their vision to be recognised as one of Australia’s most innovative tertiary institutions’.
Saini said much of what he is today was shaped during his doctoral studies in Australia where he and his wife started their shared journey and it is now a privilege to return to serve the country where it all began and to which he owes the crucial formative steps of an exceptionally rewarding career.
He did his undergraduate and master’s degree at the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, and doctorate in plant physiology from the University of Adelaide. He has received many honours, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
