NRI engineer invited to Palace by Queen Elizabeth

INTERromaRoma Agrawal, 29, a structural engineer who helped build Europe’s tallest building, the Shard, in London, has been invited to Buckingham Palace by Queen Elizabeth.

Agrawal will join a group of other female engineers at a reception to be hosted by the 89-year-old monarch, to encourage more women to take up the profession.

An official said the palace also released a photograph of the then Princess Elizabeth as a driver and mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during WWII. She enjoyed the work and wants to encourage young people of today to do the same, at a time when there is a big industry push for more females to be involved in engineering. The Queen wholeheartedly supports the concept.

As it stands just 6 percent of registered UK engineers and technicians are women, and just 15 percent of UK engineering students are female.
