NRI gets 20 year sentence in Malaysia on drug charge

NRI businessman Kabeer Kather, 55, was sentenced to 20 years in jail after a court in Kuala Lumpur found him guilty of possessing 3.2 kgs of Ketamine three years ago. Kather was found to have the drug in his possession at the Kuala Lumpur Terminal in 2012. He was initially charged and tried with drug trafficking under the same law that carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction. His jail sentence was ordered from the date of his arrest on March 26, 2012. The drug possession charge under Malaysian law carries a maximum jail term of 30 years and whipping upon conviction. Kather was spared from whipping due to his age.
