NRI gunned down during robbery in US

Paruchuri Balagopal an engineering graduate and native of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh was gunned down during a robbery attempt at his gas station in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Balagopal left for the US in 2001 and later set up a gas station in the town. On Friday night an unidentified black youth went to the gas station and threatened Balagopal with a fire arm. Balagopal gave him some money which the assailant accepted, but when Balagopal went back to his office and tried to lower the shutters, the man fired at him, killing him on the spot. He then emptied the cash register and fled the scene. A relative of Balagopal in Arunachal Pradesh said their relatives in Dallas informed them about the tragic incident and they have requested the government to assist the victim's family. Balagopal is survived by a wife and two children. Incidentally Myrtle Beach is an important tourist resort town in the state of South Carolina, whose NRI governor Nikki Haley, is the daughter of Sikh immigrants. Ms Haley was on a much publicised visit to India recently.
