According to the External Affairs Ministry a young woman from Hyderabad who worked as a domestic helper in Saudi Arabia died of ‘natural reasons’. The family of the deceased Asima Khatoon, 25, however alleged she was tortured by her employer.
The Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said he was told by the Mortuary that she was admitted to Hospital on the 27th of April and was later moved to the ICU. He was told that her death was due to natural reasons and that all the requisite documents were handed over to the employer for submission to the Embassy.
Ms Khatoon went to Riyadh in December, and her mother says in secret phone calls she detailed how she was being held hostage, burned and tortured mentally and physically, by her employer, Abdul Rahman Ali Mohammed.
Sadly news of her death on May 2 arrived just days after the Telangana government wrote to the Centre asking for help to free her from her employer and send her back home. The Telangana Police has written to Saudi authorities asking for details on the death of Asima.
