NRI sentenced to prison for fraud in US

Arun Ganguly, 38, has been sentenced to six years in prison after he pleaded guilty in the New York State Supreme Court, to charges he defrauded start-ups by convincing them to hire him as a consultant by using stolen identities and making false claims of personally knowing VIP capitalists including the founders of Facebook.

He forged numerous documents and signatures of wealthy individuals on documents, pledging more than $16 million to a private equity fund. He also falsely asserted his family had a multi-million dollar trust he could use to invest.

In 2013 in a separate but similar scam Ganguly made false representations about his experience and family wealth to convince an investment management firm to hire him as a consultant.
