NRI sues car dealer for not selling Mercedes

BenzSurjeet Bassi, 50 has sued New Jersey car dealership Prestige Motors Inc. for $1.26 million, for refusing to sell him a Mercedes Benz because a manager thought he came from a ‘high risk area’ and may ship the vehicle to the Taliban.

Bassi who has lived in New Jersey for 30 years told the manager he is Indian and not connected to the Islamic fundamentalist and terrorist organisation.

Still the manager refused to extend $83,000 in credit for which Bassi was qualified and had been approved by the defendant. The law suit says the refusal is a violation of the equal Credit Opportunity Act, the law suit claims the same behaviour would never have been engaged in had the plaintiff been a white citizen of the US.
