Florida government attorney Mary Thomas has announced she will run for the US Congressional elections in November 2016, and if elected she will be the first woman Indian-American lawmaker to be a member of the House of Representatives.
Thomas, 37, who was born in Charleston, South Carolina is a Republican. She is a personal friend of Florida Governor Rick Scott. She is a Christian wife, mother and lawyer. Her parents Tom and Annie are physicians who immigrated from India in 1972 and said the issue of illegal immigration is ‘deeply personal to her as her parents came to the country legally’.
Ms Thomas works as general counsel for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. She plans to step down from the post to campaign full time.
She is a graduate of the Florida State University of Law and holds a Masters of Law from the University of Miami. She has been a member of Governor Rick Scott’s Administration since he was sworn into office in January 2011.
