Number of Indian students in US up by 28%

According to a new report by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the Department of Homeland Security, the total number of Indian students studying in the US rose 28% to 134,292 comprising the second largest foreign student body in America after China. A majority are studying engineering, computer science, information technology and support services, and with students in other STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields made up 79% of all Indian students in America. The gender balance of Indian students is also skewed, two-thirds being male and one-third female. According to the chairman of The Chopras, an educational consulting group in Delhi, the reason for the rapid growth is economic, and Indian students believe the US has the best opportunities for work given that the US economy is growing and unemployment has fallen.
