Several pilgrims were killed and injured in a stampede outside the Baidyanath Dham temple in Deoghar district hear Ranchi. The pilgrims were waiting for the temple to open at 4.30 am and when it did they rushed in helter skelter, which led to the stampede.
Police say 9 males and 1 female died and some 50 were injured but locals say more died.
Over 5000 pilgrims were in the queue impatiently waiting for the temple to open. It is believed the pilgrims were from Nepal, Bihar, UP and Jharkhand. Over 100,000 visit the temple during the holy month of Sawan.
Chief Minister Raghubar Das express his grief over the incident and briefed PM Narendra Modi.
A priest said the incident exposed the poor arrangements as the stampede happened outside the campus of the temple where crowd control is obviously not controlled well enough.
