Over 90 teenagers escape from Meerut detention centre

Over 90 young offenders below the age of 18 have escaped from a Meerut detention centre by removing an iron window grille and tying bed sheets together to lower themselves to the ground, They climbed out the back of the building while police guarded the front. A senior police official said the escape was done very professionally, and was only discovered when some of the prisoners were seen on the road trying to flag down vehicles. Thirty five of the offenders have been recaptured, and whose still on the run include inmates convicted of murder, rape, theft and banditry. According to one official estimate, over 31,000 young offenders are being held at detention centres in India.
