Kutch based businessman Dinesh Somaiya had filed a complaint in a Bhuj consumer court, against his daughter's school Matruchhaya Kanya Vidyalay, for awarding her less than expected marks in an internal practical examination. He also demanded Rs.20 lakhs from the school as compensation for spoiling daughter Bhakti's career by not issuing a certificate that said low marks were awarded to the student because of malice and vendetta. Bhakti studied in B group of the science stream in Grade 12 during 2011-12, and during an internal practical test in biology she got low marks. The internal test is a formality and marks obtained do not count in board exams. The girl's parents were not satisfied and three years later moved the court against the school management and the biology teacher. The Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum turned down Somaiya's plea on the grounds that the relationship between his daughter and the school cannot be of a consumer and service provider under the law, and hence it cannot interfere.
