The Central Bureau of Investigation has charged Media Tycoon Peter Mukerjea, 59, with the murder of his step-daughter Sheena Bora. Earlier his wife Indrani Mukerjea was charged with Sheena’s murder, along with her driver Shyamvar Rai and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna.
Peter was arrested in connection with the case in November 2015, on the grounds he played a ‘major role’ in the murder. His bail plea was rejected by a CBI court that said the charge sheet was still to be filed and the investigation in the matter was continuing. Peter was lodged in Arthur Road prison and Indrani in Byculla women’s jail, both in Mumbai.
When Peter was arrested he started the process of changing the beneficiaries of one of the high-value life insurance policies he had bought in Kolkata in 2003, from Indrani and Vidhie to his 2 sons Rahul and Rabin. The CBI said during questioning Peter disclosed investments made by him and Indrani in the UK and India. He did not disclose the source of the money.
Peter is also accused of destruction of evidence, as he removed a phone and other items from Sheena’s purse after she was killed. He is also charged with misleading his biological son Rahul by giving him wrong information that Sheena was alive and in the US.
Sheena was strangled in a car in April 2012, and her body was burned and dumped in a forest in Raigad district, Maharashtra. In late 2015 the CBI took over the case from the Mumbai Police.
