In his third Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to ease the rules for middle-class taxpayers, as he took credit for his government removing hurdles such as those related to refunds. He admitted the middle class and upper middle class are more bothered with income tax officials than the police, and he is trying to change the situation.
The government has already initiated steps to ease rules to remove harassment of honest tax payers, such as dispensing with the need for taxpayers to present themselves to authorities and instead they can interact via email initially. The government changed the rules even though tax officials complained of interference by the finance ministry.
The government went ahead and speeded up refunds that were held back to shore up collections. Now they have introduced online refunds, which is a faster system.
