Protesting ‘One-Rank-One-Pension Scheme – veterans return medals

MERAexDissatisfied with the One-Rank-One-Pension (OROP) scheme announced recently, hundreds of veterans returned their gallantry medals in Delhi and other centers.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar clearly showed his disapproval saying the ex-servicemen’s protest was “unlike that of a soldier”.

He was quoted as saying “Medals are given by the country for service and gallantry rendered, and a section insisting on returning the medals because of OROP, for which the government is paying over Rs.8,000 crore is demeaning the medal and not in line with army discipline.

More than 500 veterans marched in Delhi and similar marches were held in 14 other cities, as the ex-servicemen observed ‘black Diwali’ in protest against the diluted OROP provisions.

Meanwhile former Defence Minister A K Antony accused the NDA government of betraying veterans.
