Punjab ministers as ‘goodwill ambassadors’ to woo NRIs

ivfoqnijFive Akali ministers of the SAD-BJP government in Punjab will leave for the US and Canada in early July, to act as goodwill ambassadors of the state government.

The ministers will hold meetings with the Punjabi diaspora and talk of the achievements of the 8-year tenure of the state government and its efforts to protect the interests of NRIs in Punjab.

The goodwill team will include irrigation minister Sharanjeet Singh Dhillon, rural development and panchayats minister Sikandar Singh Maluka; education minister Daljeet Singh Cheema; water supply and sanitation minister Surjeet Singh Rakhra; agriculture minister Tota Singh and CPS Mantar Singh Brar.

Tentative plans have been circulated and friends and relatives of the visiting ministers have been asked to book the venues for the meetings. Sources say the ministers have been told to foot the bill on their own or ask their NRI friends and relatives to make arrangements.

The ministers’ tour is also seen as an effort by the Akalis to neutralise the impact of the AAP, which is being much talked about in NRI circles.
