Playback singer Ankit Tiwari, who was arrested on charges of rape was seen performing at an annual Mumbai Police event, which was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. At the event known as 'Umang 2015' a galaxy of Bollywood stars perform for the men and women in uniform. Fadnavis however left the venue before Tiwari arrived and sang for the audience. Asked about Tiwari's participation an IPS officer said they would check on who invited Tiwari as they usually avoid having a person facing criminal charges in the programme. Tiwari, the 25-year-old singer was arrested last year for allegedly raping his girlfriend on several occasions, after promising to marry her. His brother Ankur was also arrested for allegedly threatening the victim if she made the sexual assault public. Both brothers were arrested and charged and both are currently out on bail. A women's rights activist and lawyer Abha Singh protested Tiwari's performance at the event and asked that an inquiry be ordered to check who invited him and who allowed him to participate. When asked about the case Tiwari's lawyer said the police have not filed a charge sheet and they are positive the case will be quashed.
