Businesses in southern India have given their employees Friday off so they can watch a new film starring Tamil cinema superstar Rajinikanth. They say this will avoid people calling in sick or simply failing to show up for work. The ‘Kabali’ star’s latest movie will be released in some 12,000 screens.
Rajinikanth who is one of Asia’s highest paid actors is also considered one of the most bankable stars in India. Even before its release ‘Kabali’ a gangster drama, raked in some $30 million in film rights sales. It will also be dubbed in Telugu, Hindi and Malay.
Some businesses in Chennai and Bangalore who declared Friday a holiday also gave their employees free tickets for the film.
Air Asia has laid on a special ‘Kabali’ flight from Bangalore to Chennai, featuring Rajinikanth’s favourite food for some 180 fans who will be aboard on the day of release. Luxury hotels in Bangalore are also holding special shows with each ticket going for $19.
In a four decade career, the actor age 65, has starred in over 170 films, most of them in Tamil.
