Saudi Arabia directive on hiring of taxi drivers to affect Indians

INTEREStaxiSaudi Arabia has decided to implement localisation in the transport sector, and has issued a directive to stop the hiring of taxi drivers.

Saudi has decided to enforce a new Act by revising the labour ministry’s Nitaqat system and moves are on to make the rule strict by bringing the taxi sector under the transport ministry, a move that will upset thousands from India including Keralites whose employment prospects will be in jeopardy. The prevailing restrictions in the pubic taxi sector have already taken a toll on Keralites.

However, given the shortage of local hands in this sector, foreigners can be considered for the time being, according to the directive from the labour ministry.
