Mumbai Municipal staff are being investigated after the story broke in the media about the recruitment scam in which many civic employees got their jobs by impersonating a dead or retired staffer, cheating scores of people out of a chance to work for a living.
Two women said they have spent years fighting for jobs. One, a BMC staffer’s widow was asked to perform sexual favours or pay a bribe, and another received death threats after she learned that two of her deceased family members’ pay slips were still being picked up – by strangers.
The investigations found a number of the racketeers had even forged police verification documents that they claimed were verified by police. The scammers also provided forged, fake, SSC and HSC certificates from a Byculla school that had ceased to exist five years ago.
