Gurbir Grewal, 42, an attorney, has been appointed top prosecutor in the most populous county in New Jersey, thereby becoming the first South Asian to occupy the post in the state. On Jan 4, he was sworn in as acting Bergen county prosecutor, succeeding John Molinelli whose 14-year long tenure ended.
Mr Grewal, a former federal prosecutor, has fought white-collar crimes for the US Attorney’s Office and most recently he served as chief of the Economic Crimes Unit in Newark.
Mr Grewal described his appointment as ‘an honour and priviege’ and said he cares deeply about the county and is committed to public service. He wants to spend his time seeing how he can make the county an even better place.
He was also sworn in as assistant attorney general in Trenton, by acting state Attorney General John Hoffman. He was first nominated for the post by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie back in 2013
He now intends to meet other law enforcement personnel to get to know their challenges and resource issues.
