Janardana Jayasankarr, 52, a security guard, has been sentenced to 14 weeks in jail for beating up his Filipino maid, Miezel Cagas Limbaga, just a month after his wife was jailed for a week for abusing the same domestic helper.
Limbaga started working for the couple in 2014. She was paid 400 Singapore dollars a month and had no days off. She did the housework, cooked, and took care of their two children age 4 and 5.
Jayasankarr allegedly dragged the maid into a bedroom and took turns with his wife to beat her.
Reports say Jayasankarr slapped her face, punched her in the stomach and chest and stamped her on the back. His wife Vidya, 32, slapped her and grabbed her neck with both hands.
The abuse was reported after another Filipino maid saw bruises on the victim’s face and body last year. The victim confided that she had been beaten up by her employers and confirmed the assault to the police.
Jayasankar’s lawyer Rajan Nair said in mitigation that the maid was a poor helper who neglected her duties, had poor hygiene and, he also claimed Limbaga had punished the children by beating them with a broom on a few occasions and she threatened to punish them more if they told their parents.
The maximum punishment for the offence is three years in jail and a Singapore dollar 7500 fine. Jayasankar will start serving his sentence on April 1.
