The Akal Takht Express train from Howrah bound for Amritsar, ran over an unidentified man at a crossing under the Quila police early one morning. Locals who saw the incident informed the police, and the driver alerted the Bareilly rail station control room.
The station master told the GRP officials who in turn asked police to take the body into their custody and send it for post mortem, which started a war of words between the sides that continued for over six hours, during which more than 16 speeding trains ran over the corpse.
Only after senior rail officials of the Quila police stepped in was the body, by then mangled beyond recognition, taken into custody and sent for postmortem.
The man is said to be in his early 20s and will be kept in the mortuary for 72 hours, and if no one claims him the police will conduct the last rites at the expense of the government.
The GRP of Bareilly said they were informed about the incident but the location comes under the jurisdiction of the Quila police and it is their duty to take care of the deceased.
