The Indian team bound for the Asia Pacific Deaf Games who were part of a 40-member squad were forced to sleep on pavements outside a Gurdwara in their wait for visas ahead of the competition beginning in Taipei shortly. The All India Sports Council of the Deaf who were responsible for the athletes failed to do their job and provide accommodation for the athletes.
The sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered an inquiry right away and said he was sad to learn of the disgraceful treatment of the athletes.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) described the incident as unfortunate and said they were not told to arrange for accommodations as the Council of the Deaf is in a mess.
Regarding the visas, they discovered that the athletes visa was rejected earlier because the Council did not provide the invitation letter of the Taiwanese embassy, so SAI stepped in and sorted out the mess created by the Council.
