SpiceJet flight hits buffalo during take-off in Surat

A Delhi bound SpiceJet plane, carrying 146 passengers and crew hit a stray buffalo during take-off from Surat. No passengers or crew were injured and the aircraft was grounded because of damage sustained in the accident. The airline stated that the buffalo that was killed in the crash was 'essentially invisible against a black background'. Stray animals are a growing menace in some airports and as a result of the recent incident SpiceJet flights from Surat are to be suspended indefinitely. The airline officials blamed lax airport security for the incident. Airports in India are generally well protected with perimeter fences, but maintenance at some smaller airports may be inadequate. In effect reports have said jackals, antelopes, peacocks, porcupines, snakes, monkeys, foxes and dogs have strayed onto runways.
