Over 7.42 lakh students were reported absent on the first day of the UP Board’s high school and intermediate examinations. Officials claimed that online registration and introducing of a mobile app to check copying, resulted in this many examinees not taking the exams.
Most students were absent in Meerut and Ghazipur districts, followed by Bareilly and Ballia, Allahabad, and Agra, as well as Lucknow, and Varanasi.
Arvind Pandey the UP Madhyamik Siksha Parishad deputy secretary said the figure was a shocker as it assumed the majority of the students had registered online with the help of the ‘copy’ mafia. Though the introduction of attendance software did not work – it also kept non-serious students away from the exam centres.
