Supreme Court gives the 'all clear' to NRI voting

The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and the Election Commission directing them to proceed with steps to ensure that NRIs are able to vote. The Centre had informed the Supreme Court that it accepted in letter and spirit the Election Commission's suggestion to extend voting rights to NRIs through postal ballots. The apex court then granted the Centre four weeks to inform it what steps it had taken to implement the suggestions. Under the proposal, NRIs will be sent ballot papers electronically and they will have to return it to poll authorities physically. The Supreme Court passed the order in response to a plea filed by Pravasi Bharat chairman Nagender Chindam seeking voting rights for NRIs.
