Mehrunnisa, a teacher at Chennai's Kesari Higher Secondary School was accused in 2012 of pinching her student's cheeks to punish him. The boy's mother took the matter to the state human rights commission and in 2013 they imposed a fine of Rs.1000 on the school for violation of the boy's human rights. The mother then sought a transfer certificate from the school, which they delayed issuing. Not satisfied with the amount of compensation and the delay, the persistent mother appealed in the high court and initiated private complaint proceedings against the teacher before a magistrate's court. Teacher Mehrunnisa then moved the court saying she was harassed by the multiple proceedings, but the Bench compounded her offences and ruled that she pay a compensation/fine of Rs.50,000.
