Temples cannot prohibit entry of women : Supreme Court

BACKtempleThe Supreme Court has ruled that unless a temple has a constitutional right, it cannot prohibit the entry of women devotees to offer worship.

The Court made the ruling in the course of the hearing of a petition by the Indian Young Lawyers Association challenging the Sabrimala Ayyappan Temple’s custom of prohibiting the entry of women devotees between the age of 10 and 50 years. It said a temple cannot prohibit entry except on the basis of religion.
