Three Indians on shortlist for $ 1 million Global Teacher Prize

Three teachers from India, Kiran Bir Sethi, Hira Prasad, and Bijal Damani have made it to the final shortlist for a $1 million Global Teacher Prize. The short list that includes 50 exceptional teachers from across the world was selected from nearly 5000 nominations from 127 countries for the Varkey GEMS Foundation instituted by UAE based NRI educationist Sunny Varkey. Of the India teachers on the shortlist, Sethi teaches at the Riverside School in Ahmedabad; Prasad is from Birla High School Junior Section in Kolkata; and Damani is from the S N Kansagra School in Rajkot. Mr Varkey said he introduced the prize this year in order to return teachers to their rightful position as one of the most respected professions in society. Oscar winner actor Kevin Spacey is among those on the Global Teacher Prize Academy panel that chooses the final winner.
