Three men were sentenced to death and three more received life sentences in the 2013 gang rape and murder of a 21-year-old student in West Bengal, as she walked home after an exam. The sentences were announced two days after the Kolkata court convicted them.
Their defense lawyer said the men would challenge the verdict in the high court.
The victim’s identity has been concealed for legal reasons. Her attackers, all local men in their 40s dragged her to an isolated factory compound where she was raped and brutalised. Her mutilated body was later found in a nearby field.
Though India’s laws were later overhauled, rights activists say violence towards women remains prevalent.
In 2014 some 37,000 rapes were reported and many more rapes go unreported.
